25 hours of work later (not all at once), RobMalon.Com is finished with its redesign! Not that you were expecting it. I sure hope that means I’ll post more! I certainly have enough content lined up. Unfortunately I’m also working on 2 other site redesigns right now and 1 new site which takes time away from daily blogging, but I’m shooting to improve the time spent on content here.
Before & After
Not too much has changed color wise, This was more of a design and usability change.

Pre-Launched Errors
If you didn’t see it last night, I actually had a very bugged out version of this site up for about 3 hours before I gave up and switched the DNS back to the old server. Note, never underestimate the usefulness of owning a dummy throwaway dev domain which points to the same server. I reverted back, tested on that, fixed things on the “real” server and re-launched for good this time! I’m sure I’ll find a few bugs at some point and I already know I have some tweaking to do and a few pages like Advertising and Links which have yet to be fully completed. You got to stand up before you can run though, right?
Wordpress 2.0.9 to 2.6 + New Server
I finally upgraded wordpress and all the plugins, including some customized ones. Primarily because I bought another new server which had PHP and mySQL upgraded. The old server had outdated versions of PHP. I know, I’m lazy - when I want to upgrade software on my server I buy new ones.
Your Thoughts?
How do you like it? Anything that could be improved upon to make your browsing experience easier? Anything you see that you’d like to be able to do on your blog? If there’s something specific, leave a comment below and I’ll be sure to include within the future content I’ll be covering about the move. Here’s some topics I plan to post about:
- Adding a widget from RSS content or API services anywhere on your site.
- Moving Servers - Having a dev environment and taking that to your live box. Ways to avoid errors early on to minimize downtime.
- Troubleshooting with Wordpress 2.6. There are some buggy bits it that I ran into.
- Lots of Resources - I didn’t reinvent the wheel in most cases. Just tweaked it to roll the way I wanted it too. Explanations behind those tweaks and what you can do to modify them to your tastes on your site.
- Tools - Software, plugins and scripts outside of wordpress I’m making use of on this site or during the production of it.
I also have a couple new video blogs I’ve already recorded. Stay tuned!

Frightening though it may be, the fall semester is just around the corner. You know what that means? You’ll actually have to get up at — wait for it — an appointed time. Carissa, being the proactive student she is, posed this question:
“Going to school in the fall, I’m looking for the ideal alarm clock to beat the late nights and what not and noticed a few digital photo frames / alarm clocks. I want a decent alarm clock that has battery backup and good resolution on the screen for viewing photos. An auxiliary audio jack would be a major plus. Which one do you guys recommend that falls under the 200 dollar mark? Thanks a million!”
Look at that — you all even received a thank you in advance! For those who’ve mastered the art of waking up on time and pretending to be a real live adult, which alarm clock / digiframe hybrid have you found to be supreme? Oh, and you know that question you’ve been hitting the snooze on? Yeah, send it on over to ask at engadget dawt com.
