RIM and Indian government smoke peace pipe on BlackBerry emails

Canadian vendor Research In Motion isn’t one to stand by and let themselves be kicked out of the potentially lucrative wireless market in India, and it would appear the Indian government has forced Research In Motion’s hand to allow them to snoop on BlackBerry emails.

Originally the Indian government threatened to ban RIM from India if a workable deal over network monitoring could not be agreed rather quickly, and giving Research In Motion a fifteen day ultimatum. Research In Motion has now announced that they have “come to terms” with the Indian government.

It took Research In Motion just over the Indian government’s fifteen day deadline, but RIM and India have now reached an agreement, and that agreement is that Research In Motion will be allowed to provide BlackBerry service in India providing that the Indian government can keep a watchful eye on all BlackBerry network data.

It would seem that Research In Motion doesn’t consider data security and privacy high on their list of importance, not as important as their own PR stance anyway, as RIM’s only proviso to agreeing to the Indian snoop is that should any data information be leaked, the Indian government should shoulder full blame.

Well it seems that India is now going to get the BlackBerry push email, but whether or not anyone can actually trust mobile email these days is another thing. Who knows when someone will get a knock on their door from government officials concerning the email content they have sent. In this modern age is appears there is no longer any privacy, one wonders just how long it will be before standard letter mail is intercepted, opened, read and then forwarded on in the name of governmental security.
